COPD treatment is entering a new era, and experts at CHEST 2026 will help clinicians keep up with these developments.
“Until recently, we had limited treatment options,” said Sara Assaf, MD, Senior Faculty at Baylor College of Medicine. “Now all of the biologics and antialarmins are opening the field to more targeted therapies, more precision medicine, and offering new treatments to consider for COPD management.”
Dr. Assaf will chair the session Rewriting the COPD Playbook: What Biologics and Antialarmins Can Bring to the Table at 2:15 pm MST on Wednesday, October 21, in the Phoenix Convention Center.
Presenters will explore the different inflammatory endotypes of COPD and explain how better understanding of these endotypes is changing the treatment landscape. Speakers will also review evidence from the latest clinical trials on biologics and antialarmins, which biomarkers can be used to predict which patients will respond best to these targeted therapies, and what the future holds for COPD research and management.
“The session is designed to move from the biology of airway inflammation and disease to clinical implications,” Dr. Assaf said.
She will address the heterogeneity of airway inflammation in COPD, with a focus on type 2 inflammation as a catalyst for the development of emerging targeted therapies. Nicola Hanania, MD, MS, FCCP, will provide a breakdown of recent data from randomized trials on the use of biologics and antialarmins in COPD. Tariq Sallam, MD, will discuss biomarkers as predictors of response to COPD therapies and how they help with patient selection for targeted therapies. And Diego Maselli, MD, FCCP, will identify future research needs and evidence gaps, as well as forthcoming advancements that could change COPD management.
