Recognizing Bronchiectasis: When it might be more than COPD or asthma

Timely diagnosis is critical for patients with bronchiectasis, but many cases remain unrecognized. Please join bronchiectasis expert Dr. Colin Swenson as he examines clinical evidence to uncover a commonly missed driver of exacerbations and progressive lung function decline at Learning Theater 3 on Tuesday, October 20, at 10:30am MST.

Bronchiectasis is a chronic and progressive inflammatory airway disease that can contribute to declining lung function over time.1-5 When symptoms overlap with COPD or asthma, this can obscure diagnosis, which may lead to delayed diagnosis despite recurrent exacerbations and persistent respiratory symptoms.1,6 While bronchiectasis can occur as an isolated condition, it often coexists with other airway diseases.

Emerging evidence suggests that patients with coexisting bronchiectasis and COPD or asthma face a heightened clinical burden, including increased exacerbation risk, greater symptom severity, and poorer outcomes.3,7 As awareness of bronchiectasis continues to grow, pulmonologists play a critical role in recognizing potential disease signals and identifying appropriate candidates for imaging.  Shortening time to diagnosis may help improve patient outcomes.

In addition to attending the Learning Theater event, you can explore more about bronchiectasis by visiting booth #144 during CHEST 2026.  A variety of educational resources will be available, including printed resources for you to read and keep, and staff will be onsite to answer questions you may have. Insmed looks forward to seeing you at CHEST 2026.
