In the lead-up to this year’s annual meeting, the CHEST Guideline Oversight Committee has been busy preparing for the approval of the first North American bronchiectasis guidelines. During a special CHEST 2025 session, the panelists who drafted the new guidelines will highlight key recommendations and the rationale behind them.

Ashwin Basavaraj, MD, FCCP, will chair the session CHEST North American Bronchiectasis Guidelines: Everything You Need to Know at 2:45 pm CT on Tuesday, October 21, in McCormick Place, Lakeside Center, Room 350.
“Up until now, most of the guidance available to clinicians has come from international societies from Europe and other parts of the world. What has been missing is a framework rooted in North American clinical practice and patient populations,” Dr. Basavaraj said. “Given that bronchiectasis is a condition of growing prevalence, and with new therapies available and others in development, the need for updated guidance has never been greater.”
Dr. Basavaraj, Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of the Bronchiectasis and NTM Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and System Chief of Pulmonary Medicine at New York City Health and Hospitals, will open with a summary of the guideline recommendations.
Mark Metersky, MD, FCCP, Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, and Director of the Center for Bronchiectasis Care at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, will provide an overview of the guideline development process.
Anne O’Donnell, MD, FCCP, Professor of Medicine and Division Chief of Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine and Medical Director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Georgetown University Medical Center, will present a case-based scenario for implementing the guideline recommendations.
Following the presentations, Timothy Aksamit, MD, FCCP, Associate Professor in the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, will join the others for a panel discussion and a question-and-answer period with the audience. “We hope these guidelines and this session will help clinicians understand appropriate therapies available for patients, how they should approach the timing and selection of treatments, and the evolving strategies they need to be aware of as the management of bronchiectasis continues to advance,” Dr. Basavaraj said. “Our goal is to raise awareness of bronchiectasis as an important and increasingly recognized condition, and to give providers the tools and guidance they need to improve patient care.”
