Annual Meeting, CHEST 2025, Session Coverage

Session to present key allergy insights that asthma clinicians need to know

There is a significant overlap between asthma and allergic conditions, particularly allergic rhinitis and chronic sinusitis with nasal polyposis, making it essential to manage both to achieve the best health outcomes in patients affected by these conditions.

During the CHEST 2025 session Ten Things About Allergy You Need to Know, a panel of experts will highlight some of the comorbidities commonly seen with asthma and provide guidance on how pulmonologists can address allergic comorbidities in their patients with asthma. The discussion will be held at 9:45 am CT on Sunday, October 19, in McCormick Place, Lakeside Center, Room 353B.

S. Shahzad Mustafa, MD, Division Head of Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology at Rochester Regional Health and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, will chair the session.

“The session will address common allergic conditions seen in the setting of asthma, which is encountered by numerous pulmonologists,” he said. “This will include a discussion of medical management versus immunotherapy for allergic rhinitis. It’ll also include recognition and management of chronic sinusitis with nasal polyposis, which is a common comorbidity in individuals with asthma, particularly severe asthma. And it’ll also touch upon anaphylaxis in the setting of patients with asthma.”

Allergic rhinitis occurs in approximately 70% to 80% of people with asthma. Given its prevalence, Dr. Mustafa will review management strategies for allergic rhinitis, including environmental control measures and evidence-based medical treatments. He will also address commonly encountered myths around this condition.

The session will feature key experts discussing comorbidities in asthma in their respective disease areas. Anju Peters, MD, MS, Professor in the Department of Medicine and Department of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, will cover sinusitis and nasal polyposis. Devon Paul, MD, Assistant Professor of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston McGovern Medical School, will discuss immunotherapy and asthma. Christopher Codispoti, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Allergy and Immunology at the UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School, will address anaphylaxis and asthma.

The session is designed to encourage colleagues in the pulmonary and allergy fields to collaborate on ways to optimize patient management, Dr. Mustafa said.

“This will be an opportunity to have an evidence-based approach to managing comorbidities like allergic rhinitis and sinusitis with nasal polyposis,” he said. “I think this session will also hopefully highlight the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach in managing asthma with pulmonologists and other appropriate specialists, often the allergist.”
